Globe Telecom calls for unified cybersecurity plan

Globe Telecom Inc. is urging for unified national cooperation and increased investment in secure infrastructure as cyber threats become more sophisticated and artificial intelligence adoption accelerates across the Philippines.

The telecommunications arm of the Ayala Group is developing enterprise-grade infrastructure to support an AI-powered future, focusing on agent-based architectures, shared landing zones and MLOps pipelines.

The technical framework is designed to speed up development while ensuring systems remain auditable and aligned across internal teams.

Globe head of AI and privacy governance Derick Adil said resilience now requires systems to remain ethical, secure and explainable as they scale.

Globe is advocating for agile, sandbox-style regulation at the national level, citing models used in Singapore that allow innovators and policymakers to test new technologies in controlled environments.

The company utilizes internal testbeds, such as its AI Kitchen and Center for Enablement, to experiment with low-code platforms and agent-based systems. Company officials believe this co-creation model will help develop grounded policies that protect the public while enabling innovation.

To combat evolving fraud tactics like spoofed sender IDs and fake cell towers, Globe said it has implemented a policy of blocking all person-to-person SMS containing links.

It said it is the only Philippine operator to do so and has also removed links from its own official text broadcasts.

The company said it uses machine learning models to flag suspicious numbers, which are then verified by the Globe Security Operations Center before being deactivated.

Globe chief privacy officer Irish Salandanan-Almeida said stopping scams requires close coordination across telecommunications, banking and regulatory sectors. She said the company is working toward real-time intelligence sharing to address modern threats.

The company has expanded its consumer protections by launching ScamShield on the GlobeOne app for Android to alert users to fraudulent messages.

Globe has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the Bankers’ Association of the Philippines and adopted over 10 data-sharing agreements with various financial institutions.

These partnerships were facilitated by regulatory guidance clarifying that fraud prevention serves as a justification for cross-sector collaboration.

Globe executives said public-private partnerships should be viewed as essential infrastructure to drive AI readiness and fortify national scam defenses.

The company said shared accountability and aligned priorities are necessary for the Philippines to transition safely into a digital future.
