The Chinese-funded Bucana Bridge Project is expected to open before Christmas, delivering a major boost to travel, transport and economic growth in Davao, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday inspected the completed infrastructure, which is aimed at easing travel convenience and transport while spurring economic growth between the city’s two coastal areas.
Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon said the Davao River Bridge was expedited upon the President’s orders, with its construction given the highest level of quality and structural integrity.
The P3.1-billion bridge is an integral component of the Davao City Coastal Bypass Road. Once open, it will connect the eastern and western coastal areas of the city, which are separated by the Davao River.
The project is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in downtown Davao, offering a faster, safer and more efficient route between Barangays 76-A Bucana and Matina Aplaya.
Funded by China’s Official Development Assistance (ODA), the bridge features a four-lane, six-span extradosed structure stretching 480 meters, complemented by 860 meters of approach roads.
The structure exemplifies engineering excellence and compliance with international standards.
The Bucana Bridge is expected to ease congestion, improve regional connectivity, provide alternative routes and enhance access to business districts, tourism destinations and essential public services.
Construction of the bridge began in November 2023. The project supports the “Bagong Pilipinas” vision, which seeks to drive regional development, improve traffic flow, and enhance the quality of life through modernized infrastructure.
