The Department of Agriculture has accredited 13 Chilean companies to export beef, pork and chicken for three years to broaden the country’s food supply sources and improve resilience against livestock diseases and supply constraints.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. approved the accreditation, which is valid until 2028 and also authorizes shipments of offals, animal fats and other by-products, the department said Sunday.
The decision followed a request from the Chilean government and a June inspection mission by the Department of Agriculture (DA). The mission evaluated Chile’s veterinary services, animal health systems and food safety controls.
The inspection team found Chile compliant with World Organization for Animal Health standards and determined the 13 firms met Philippine quarantine and meat inspection requirements.
“As much as we strive to produce more food locally, we also need steady and reliable sources overseas,” Tiu Laurel said.
