The Department of Transportation (DOTr) and the Quezon City local government agreed to improve active transport infrastructure and establish green spaces in the city.
The DOTr said in a statement Monday the initiative is part of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to create commuter-focused facilities to ensure the safety and mobility of commuters, cyclists, and pedestrians.
DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon said expanding and improving bike lanes, public utility vehicle (PUV) stops and pedestrian lanes underscore the government’s commitment to building a network of commuter-oriented public transport systems.
“We really have to do it. The President himself said we should think about the commuters. We really have to change our mindset,” Dizon said during an inspection of bike lanes in Quezon Memorial Circle, where he was joined by Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman and House Transportation committee chair Franz Pumaren.
Part of the upgrades in Quezon City will be the expansion of bike lanes, construction of PUV stops and the development of a directional island at the intersection of East Avenue and Elliptical Road, the DOTr said.
“This really sets the standard for our commuters, pedestrians and bikers—they feel safe, there’s greenery. We will replicate this in other areas,” said Dizon.
