The Bureau of Philippine Standards (BPS) of the Department of Trade and Industry is considering the adoption of several international standards on food products.
BPS director Neil Catajay said in a notice to stakeholders food-related standards published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) are being proposed for adoption as Philippine National Standards (PNS).
Catajay said these include ISO 3093:2009, which specifies the determination of alpha-amylase activity in cereals using the Hagberg-Perten falling number method. This applies to wheat, rye, their flours, durum wheat and semolina.
He said ISO 3657:2023 details the method for determining the saponification value of fats and oils, while ISO 3961:2024 outlines the procedure for determining the iodine value in animal and vegetable fats and oils.
ISO 7301:2021/Amd 1:2024 establishes minimum specifications for rice (Oryza sativa L.) intended for international trade. Meanwhile, ISO 7971-2:2019 provides the method for measuring the bulk density, also referred to as “mass per hectoliter,” of cereals.
