The Department of Energy endorsed 11 power generation projects with a combined capacity of 4,500 megawatts to the transmission and grid operator National Grid Corp. of the Philippines for a system impact study in January 2025.
“In January 2025, the DOE issued 11 SIS endorsements, which are composed of two amendments and nine new applications,” the company said.
The SIS will determine the capacity of the power grid to accommodate additional capacities and identify necessary improvements needed such as transmission lines, transformers or substations
The DOE endorsed to NGCP the 2,000-MW Maton pumped storage hydro project of Pan Pacific Renewable Power Phils. Corp. PPPPC is developing the hydro project located in the municipalities of Pudtol and Kabugao in Apayao province.
The agency also endorsed two pumped storage projects of San Miguel Corp.-led San Roque Hydropower Inc. (SRHI) with a combined capacity of 1,600 MW located in Itogon, Benguet province.
These are the 800-MW San Roque Lower East hydro project in Barangay Dalupirip, Itogon and the 800-MW San Roque West hydro project in Barangay Ampucao, Itogon.
Other projects are the 82-MW circulating fluidized bed coal plant Toledo Power Co. of Meralco PowerGen Corp. in Barangay Daanlungsod, Toledo City in Cebu and the 304-MW wind project of Gemini Wind Energy Corp. owned by Vena Energy in Northern Samar.
The DOE also endorsed three projects of Airstream Renewables Corp. for grid impact study, including the 200-MW Real offshore wind farm in Quezon, the 100-MW Silang Maragondon wind farm in Real, Quezon and the 40-MW Pandan Labayat wind farm in Real, Quezon. Airstream is a subsidiary of listed NexGen Energy Corp.
The remaining projects approved for the conduct of SIS are Philnew Hydro Power Corp.’s 5.82 MW Mat-i 1 hydro project in Claveria, Misamis Oriental, A Brown Co. Inc. subsidiary Northmin Renewables Corp.’s 200-MW Misor wind power in Misamis Oriental and PetroGreen Energy Corp. subsidiary EcoSolar Energy Corp.’s 20-MW/30-megawatthour Panitan battery energy storage project in Capiz.
