Department of Trade and Investments (DTI) Secretary Ma. Cristina Roque expressed optimism about the potential for a renewed focus on the Philippines-United States free trade agreement (FTA) under the administration of US President Donald Trump.
Roque, speaking at the Parliamentary Intelligence-Security Forum on Feb. 4, 2025, emphasized the opportunity to forge a new generation trade agreement that expands market access while ensuring high standards for labor rights, environmental protection and social inclusivity.
“Our primary focus is to secure market access opportunities through a possible bilateral free trade agreement, along with the reauthorization of the United States Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) and the potential Critical Minerals Agreement,” she said.
She said the initiatives would enhance the Philippines’ role in global value chains and contribute to economic growth for both nations.
Roque also underscored the significance of the proposed United States-Philippines Partnership Act, which she called a landmark piece of legislation.
“This act lays the foundation for deeper economic cooperation between our countries, particularly in the areas of critical minerals and infrastructure development,” she said.
The DTI cited the Philippine government’s commitment to creating an environment conducive to trade and investment.
It identified several bold reforms, including amendments to the Foreign Investment Act, the Public Service Act and the Retail Trade Liberalization Act as key measures that demonstrate the Philippines’ commitment to attracting foreign investment and strengthening its position in the global market.
