The 2003 National Nutrition and Health Survey revealed a startling statistic: nearly 80 percent of Filipino women and 60 percent of men over 50 are at high risk for osteoporosis. Yet, many dismiss its symptoms like persistent back pain, stooped posture, or unexpected height loss as natural signs of aging.
Osteoporosis, the “Grinch” of bone health, silently weakens bones, leading to fractures and reduced quality of life.
Flordeliza, a 91-year-old woman from Pangasinan, experienced the devastating consequences of osteoporosis when she slipped and fractured her hip. Her family dismissed her symptoms, but a bone density test revealed undiagnosed osteoporosis, resulting in costly surgery and months of painful recovery.
Unfortunately, Flordeliza’s story is not unique. Osteoporosis occurs when bone loss outpaces bone formation, making bones brittle and prone to fractures. Early intervention is crucial, as the condition often progresses silently.
The good news is that osteoporosis is both preventable and manageable. Bone mineral density (BMD) tests like DEXA scans can assess fracture risk and monitor the effectiveness of treatments. For those with osteoporosis, medications like zoledronic acid, denosumab and alendronate can slow bone loss and reduce fracture risk.
Prevention is key. A bone-healthy lifestyle starts with proper nutrition and exercise. Calcium-rich foods such as fortified milk, cheese, yogurt, soy products, fish, and leafy greens strengthen bones, while adequate Vitamin D from sunlight or supplements ensures proper calcium absorption. Regular weight-bearing and resistance exercises, including walking, jogging, or strength training also play a critical role in maintaining bone density.
Filipinos above 50 are encouraged to start the year right by prioritizing their health and ensuring a lifetime of wonderful memories.
