Welcome Supermart near Welcome Rotunda in Quezon City closed its doors to shoppers on New Year’s Eve after more than 76 years of operations.
The supermarket, established by businessman Benito Cua Sun Sing in 1948, announced that it would be closing its doors permanently after store hours on Dec. 31, 2024.
It held a closing-out sale on Dec. 31 to serve its loyal customers for the last time.
“Due to the rising cost of operations, we have to close our doors to you on our last day, 31 December 2024, after 76 long years of operating on this spot. It’s sad but our dad started a small eatery here back in 1948 when the Rotunda was built. Watch out for our sale items. Everything must go. We thank you for your kind patronage all these years and traveling down this road with us,” the store announced in its banner.
Steven Cua, the store’s owner and a son of the founder, said in a television interview they had to close after more than seven decades of operations because of “stiff competition” and “unbeatable” inflation and other factors.
“That’s a clear indication of how the economy’s running,” Cua said in the interview
Welcome Supermart has another branch in Baclaran, Parañaque City.
