Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila has announced it will close and cease operations starting July 1 this year as it embarks on major repairs.
Built in 1973 and opened in 1976, the five-star luxury hotel said it will only honor engagements and reservations until the end of June and “close its iconic doors thereafter.”
“This decision comes as part of our ongoing commitment to providing our guests and colleagues with the best possible experience,” Sofitel said in a statement.
The bayside property acknowledged its various stakeholders through the years, having operated for almost half a century.
“Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila had a long legacy as the hotel of choice for almost five decades for heads of states, celebrities, and global corporations alike, and it has been home to celebrations and milestones of our beloved patrons and clients,” Sofitel said.
“We are deeply grateful for the unwavering support and patronage of our stakeholders, employees, and guests who have been instrumental in this long journey,” it added.
It is not yet clear for how long the hotel will remain shuttered, even as sources said its landlord, GSIS, has been advised on the renovation plan.
In an interview mid-last year, Philippine Plaza Holdings Inc. (PPHI) president Esteban Pena Sy said the hotel would need a major renovation to remain competitive.
“The hotel is almost 50 years old. A lot of retouching needs to be done… (to) beautify the hotel to keep the hotel competitive after the reclamation,” Sy said.
