DITO Telecommunity Corp. said Wednesday it rolled out a pilot project with Dasmarinas Village in Makati City for the installation of street-level 5G micro sites to provide a comprehensive coverage speed and capacity for the whole village.

“DITO has provided a solution that is the first of its kind in the Philippines that is aimed at breaking this impasse together with our partner solutions provider Huawei for this project,” said DITO chief technology officer Rodolfo Santiago.

“These DITO micro sites are installed in street lamp posts in strategic locations in and around the village to provide ‘true’ 5G or stand-alone 5G connectivity to residents of Dasmarinas Village, and not the hybrid 4G-5G currently offered by the two other telcos,” he said.

Santiago said this technology has far reaching effects especially for areas where tower-building is prohibited or not allowed.

“This launch is testament to the ongoing commitment of DITO in the PH to provide world class service to our countrymen wherever they may be,” he said.

The company earlier said capital expenditures for this year would reach P27 billion, lower than P50 billion it spent last year.

The company already spent over P200 billion for the initial rollout of its infrastructure and other operating expenses as part of its commitment to invest P257 billion over a five-year period to achieve 55 megabits per second of internet speed, covering 84 percent of the population.

DITO’s population coverage reached about 78 percent. As of end-December 2022, DITO had 15 million subscribers.
