Aboitiz Power Corp. plans to build a binary plant in Tiwi, Albay to expand its renewable energy portfolio in the next decade.

AboitizPower said subsidiary AP Renewables Inc. will construct the binary geothermal power plant utilizing excess heat from spent brine at the Tiwi geothermal facility—the country’s first geothermal power plant. The facility will generate an additional 17-megawatt gross capacity of clean and renewable energy for the grid.

“The expansion of our Cleanergy portfolio isn’t solely hinged on acquisitions or the construction of big-ticket projects. At Aboitiz Power and within the Aboitiz Group, we always seek ways to optimize available resources. This project is a testament to that,” said Aboitiz Power president and chief executive Emmanuel Rubio.
