ISTANBUL, TURKEY—The Turkish Flour Yeast and Ingredients Promotion Group, or TFYI, is bullish on exports to the Philippines with the launch of a new quality certification system in March.

TFYI chairman Turgay Unlu told reporters said the new certification system would help Turkey achieve its target of increasing exports to the Philippines.

The group aims to raise exports to the Philippines to $50 million from the current $27 million a year.

“By increasing the basis of quality… you will see us rising to the different segments because of the quality. There will be Turkish flour in every segment, whichever quality you are looking for, we will provide ,” Unlu said.

The new certification aims to provide high quality Turkish hard wheat flour to the current and target markets under the guarantee of TFYI, and improve the quality perception of Turkish flour in the export markets.

TFYI, established in April 2012, is promoting Turkish flour, yeast, starch, soups and ingredients globally to improve brand image and increase the export of value added products.

The Philippines will be the first market to put into practice the quality system, bing one of the most important markets of Turkey.

Under the plan, Turkish flour will be distributed to bakeries and industrial promotion points and trials will be conducted.

Mehmet Buyukeksi, chairman of Turkish Exporters Assembly, noted the need to increase exports to the Philippines, saying the Southeast Asian nation merely accounted for 2.7 percent of Turkey’s total export earnings of $1.5 billion in 2015.

“It’s very small amount. We have to really increase our export to the Philippines,” Buyukeksi said.

Exports of Turkish flour to the Philippines declined in recent years due to a anti-dumping issue.

“We are pressing the government to have discussions. We have some detailed studies that we are working on (the Philippine market) but it (the relationship)  has to be bilateral. It can’t be one-sided. We believe that we could raise our relationship,” Unlu said.
