Sports car maker McLaren Automotive of the UK is looking at the growing economy of the Philippines to distribute the luxury brand.

Company officials arrived in the Philippines about three weeks ago in search for an exclusive distributor of the brand.

“They came here, talked to a number of potential dealers and they ended up with a shortlist of three of the biggest distributors in the Philippines,” UK Ambassador to the Philippine Asif Ahmad said Thursday.

He said McLaren officials noted that it was the only British car brand that had not reached the Philippine market.

With the entry of Aston Martin, Lotus and MG in 2015, there are now nine British car brands in the Philippines. The others are Jaguar, Land Rover, Mini, Rolls-Royce, Bentley and Morgan.

Ahmad said he told told McLaren officials that the Philippines was a good market for pricey cars, with more people climbing the social ladder on increased purchasing power. He added affluent car enthusiasts would be more than interested to buy and drive a McLaren.

Meanwhile, another British maker of consumer electronic and durable goods plans to make a grand entrance into the Philippine manufacturing sector.

The British company will put up a manufacturing facility in a industrial zone in Batangas, its second overseas manufacturing hub.

The consumer goods manufacturer is poised to make an official announcement of its plan and intentions for the Philippine market by July 2016

The unidentified British company is a high-technology manufacturer of popular British appliance brand.

“Originally, their plan is to go to Mexico to further penetrate the American market. But it has chosen the Philippines and we are glad they did. It will be a huge boost to the Philippines,” Ahmad said.

The company has created about 30,000 jobs in its existing manufacturing center in Asia about seven to eight years ago.

Ahmad said the company had a lot of confidence in the Philippine manufacturing industry with its pool of talents.
