Chinese cuisine event bridges 2 cultures

The Chinese Embassy in the Philippines, World Federation of Chinese Catering Industry and the Federation of Filipino Chinese Associations of the Philippines Foundation held the “Chinese Cuisine: A Culinary Tapestry of History and Flavor by the Chinese Courier @ the Philippines” event on Nov. 20, 2024 in Manila.

The event focused on Chinese food culture and featured a variety of activities, including photo exhibition, skill display and food tasting.

Attendees enjoyed the art of Chinese cooking and a variety of flavors that highlight the timeless appeal of Chinese culture. Anhui, Cantonese, and Fujian cuisines were served.

More than 400 political and business professionals attended the event.

Vice President Sara Duterte, in a video message, praised the diversity and cultural values embodied in Chinese cuisine.  She acknowledged the role of food in promoting cultural exchange and fostering mutual understanding between nations.

China Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian highlighted the depth of Chinese culture and the important role of cuisine in its global influence.

He said that through President Xi Jinping’s Global Civilization Initiative, China aims to foster mutual learning and growth among civilizations.

The event, centered on Chinese culinary traditions, serves as a key platform for advancing the said initiative.

Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Undersecretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro said the event is a testament to the unifying power of food, which bridges cultures and brings people together.

Wang Juhao, head of the World Federation of Chinese Catering Industry delegation, said the event featured a team of master chefs from Anhui province, who demonstrated Huizhou culinary traditions and the cultural stories behind them.

FFCAP president Dante Chua underscored the importance of Chinese food as a cultural vehicle.

He said that Chinese food is not just an indulgence for the taste buds but it is also a significant representation of Chinese culture.

Chua said the food showcase not only highlighted the unique appeal of Chinese culinary traditions but also injected new vitality into cultural exchanges between China and the Philippines.
