More for others

"Here is the last part of my speech."

(Third of three parts)

Last week, I began my one year of service as National President of the Junior Chamber International Philippines. I would like to share my inaugural address delivered during my induction on December 13, 2020.

As National President, we promise to provide the members of our organization an opportunity to be heard and to contribute their own ideas in shaping the direction moving forward, to enhance even more their knowledge, skills and abilities and to empower them to take part in making ours a better future. With all your support, we look forward to a JCI Philippines that is more dynamic, innovative and confident of what it can do to realize positive change.

But more importantly, at the core of being “more for others” is the imperative for our leadership to let our members know that they are valued and cared for. It is important for the organization to respect and affirm their potential—that in many diverse ways, they live out the same JCI Creed that brings together all JCI chapters in the Philippines and around the world.

At the end of this one year to lead, we hope that our leadership will successfully engage, enable and empower our members to believe in their own possibilities and shaped by values of authenticity, service, integrity, excellence and inclusion, they can transform themselves into leaders who are willing to do more for others.

Finally, to be more for others demands from each of us a mission and responsibility of selfless generosity.

To be more for others requires of us generosity in the work that we do as JCI local organizations: first, the generosity of purpose; second, the generosity of service; and third, generosity of friendship.

Generosity of purpose. The programs and projects that we carry out and implement are directed towards diverse ends and purposes—from healthcare to education, from everyday community concerns to the global Sustainable Development Goals. No social need is too small to be ignored or taken lightly. This speaks a lot about the generosity of purpose in the work that JCI local organizations do.

Generosity of service. The programs and projects that our local organizations carry out are done voluntarily, with our members using their own resources, giving the best effort and their time, just to make sure the work is done. We are proud of the fact that we are a voluntary organization, receiving no reward or compensation. Thankfully, being part of JCI means finding joy in service, because for us, service itself is our work’s reward.

Generosity of friendship. The best thing about working on JCI projects is that we are working with friends, with whom we share not only our fondest memories, but our strongest passions. Many of us would not have probably found the courage, confidence and conviction to take on leadership roles without the encouragement, patience, and support of our JCI friends and mentors.

This is the generosity of leadership that has for long defined the Junior Chamber International. I hope this will keep us always inspired by the profound optimism and sincere compassion that no matter how hard things may get in our world, service will always retain its compelling universal value.

Please join me in this prayer.

Panginoon, turuan mo akong maging bukas-palad

In closing, allow me to pose before all of you this challenge: you willing to envision a better JCI Philippines?

Think of all the strengths that our JCI members have—our expertise, knowledge, experience, power and resources—and the achievements we have all accomplished in our own respective fields.

Imagine if together we can be more generous to share all these strengths and work even more closely to create sustainable impact.

Imagine if we can be more.

Imagine if we can be more for others.

Let’s be more! Let’s be more for others, JCI Philippines!

Madamo nga salamat ha iyo ngatanan! Mabuhay ang JCI Philippines!
