Singer and rising young actress Zaphanie is stepping into the lead role in Maka, GMA’s latest youth-oriented series that blends drama and musical elements.
Talking to Manila Standard Entertainment, the former winner of Idol Philippines discussed her growing passion for acting and the support she has received in this new endeavor.
“I’ve learned to love acting,” Zaphanie said. “It used to scare me because I’m really shy. But after my experiences in showbiz and encouragement from trusted friends, I’ve become more confident.”
While she continues to prioritize her music, Zaphanie noted that acting has gained importance for her.
“With MAKA, I can do both,” she said.” After all the experiences I’ve had in showbiz, including the encouragement I receive from people I value the most, my confidence has grown, along with my passion for art in general.”
“With singing, acting is still present. Not every song resonates with me, but since it’s an art form, I guess it’s always been in my heart. And it has fired up even more since I started acting,” Zephanie added.
The singer and actress expressed appreciation for the trust placed in her and her co-actors by GMA Public Affairs.
“There’s some pressure, but we’re thankful for the confidence they have in us,” she said. “I feel lucky to have support from many people.”
Zephanie believes the series will resonate with viewers of all ages.
“They can really relate to it,” she stated, noting that even the cast finds similarities with their characters. “We all have dreams, but we also face struggles. That’s what MAKA is about—overcoming those challenges.”
The teen drama features a cast of Gen Z actors including Ashley Sarmiento and Marco Masa, along with Sparkle teen talents Olive May, John Clifford, Dylan Menor, Chanty Videla from the K-pop group Lapillus, Sean Lucas, and May Ann Basa, also known as “Bangus Girl.”
Set in Douglas MacArthur High School for the Arts, the story follows Sir V, played by Romnick Sarmenta, an accomplished but infamous artist who returns to his hometown and reluctantly takes a teaching position. Through his role as a mentor, he learns valuable lessons from his students.
The cast also includes Tina Paner, Jojo Alejar, Sharmaine Arnaiz, and Maricar De Mesa, with Carmen Soriano rounding out the ensemble.
Directed by Rod Marmol, Maka aims to continue GMA’s tradition of youth-oriented programming that focuses on relatable themes with modern storytelling.
Maka premieres today at 4:45 p.m. on GMA and via Kapuso Stream, with global viewers able to watch on GMA Pinoy TV.
