Pasig Ferry limits run due to water lilies

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced that the Pasig River Ferry Service (PRFS) is currently operating only between Guadalupe and Sta. Ana due to water lilies clogging the river.

The ferry service runs between Pasig City and Manila, with 11 stations: Pinagbuhatan, San Joaquin, and Maybunga in Pasig; Guadalupe and Valenzuela in Makati City; Hulo in Mandaluyong City; and Lambingan, Sta. Ana, PUP Sta. Mesa, Lawton, and Escolta in Manila, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

But on Tuesday, the boats were unable to travel through the entire route due to the high volume of water hyacinth in the Napindan dockyard. The MMDA assured the public the ferry service will resume normal operations as soon as the Pasig River becomes passable.

The agency regularly conducts clean-up activities to clear the river of water hyacinths and other floating garbage. The water lilies entangle the ferry’s propeller, preventing the boats from traveling at normal speed. The propellers have to be elevated so that tangled water lilies and even pieces of trash can be removed.
