Pizza and burgers for humans are bad for dogs

When we think of treating our dogs, it is tempting to share some of our favorite food with them. While it might seem harmless to share a slice of pizza or a bite of a burger with your dog, these human food can actually be harmful to them.

Dr. Richard Shaffer, in “Can Dogs Eat Pizza and Burger? Is It Safe?” published in the Daily Pawlicy website, urged owners refrain from giving human pizza and burgers to their dogs:

1. High Fat Content

One of the primary concerns with feeding a dog human pizza and burgers is their high fat content. Dogs require a balanced diet that is specifically formulated to meet their nutritional needs. While fats are a necessary part of a dog’s diet, the amount and type of fat found in pizza and burgers are often excessive.

A typical pizza is loaded with cheese, which is high in fat, and toppings like pepperoni or sausage which are processed and also high in fat. Similarly, burgers, especially those from fast food chains, are often greasy and contain high levels of saturated fats.

2. High Sodium Levels

Sodium is essential for dogs in small amounts, but the levels found in human food can be dangerously high for them. Processed meats used as pizza toppings and in burgers are particularly high in sodium, which can lead to salt poisoning in dogs if consumed in large quantities.

Symptoms of salt poisoning include vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst or urination, lethargy, and even seizures. In severe cases, it can be fatal.

3. Toxic Ingredients

Many of the ingredients commonly found in pizza and burgers are toxic to dogs. Onions and garlic, often used as seasonings or toppings, are particularly dangerous. These ingredients contain compounds that can damage a dog’s red blood cells, leading to a condition known as hemolytic anemia. Even small amounts of onion or garlic can be harmful, and the effects may not be immediately apparent.

4. Spices and Seasonings

Human pizza and burgers are often seasoned with various spices. Spicy food can irritate a dog’s gastrointestinal tract. Sauces like tomato sauce on pizza often contain added sugar and salt, as well as ingredients like onions and garlic, further increasing the risk to your dog’s health. The high acidity of tomato-based sauces can also lead to stomach upset in some dogs.

5. Processed Ingredients and Additives

Burgers, especially those from fast-food chains, often contain a variety of processed ingredients and additives that are not suitable for dogs. These may include preservatives, artificial flavors, and colorings, which can cause allergic reactions or other health issues in dogs. Processed cheese is another concern. It often contains additives and high levels of sodium.

Many fast-food burgers contain fillers and by-products that are not nutritionally beneficial for dogs. These ingredients can be difficult for dogs to digest and may contribute to long-term health problems.

6. Risk of Obesity and Related Health Problems

Regularly feeding dogs human pizza and burgers can lead to obesity. Obesity in dogs is linked to a range of health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, joint issues, and a shortened lifespan. The high calorie content of pizza and burgers, combined with their unhealthy fat and sugar levels, can quickly add up and lead to excessive weight gain.

Once a dog becomes obese, it can be challenging to help them lose weight, especially if they have developed other health conditions as a result. Maintaining a healthy weight is important for a dog’s overall well-being, and feeding them human food like pizza and burgers undermines this goal.

7. Nutritional Imbalance

Dogs require a specific balance of nutrients, including protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, to maintain their health. Commercial dog food are formulated to meet these needs, while human food like pizza and burgers are not.

Regularly feeding dogs these food can lead to deficiencies or excesses of certain nutrients, which can cause health problems.

Healthy and Safe Alternative

· Dog Friendly Burgers:

It is possible to make a healthy version of a burger snack by using dog-friendly ingredients. Start with lean ground beef, pork or chicken. Mix in finely chopped vegetables like carrots, squash, and sweet potatoes for added nutrients and fiber. Do not season with salt, onions, garlic, or any other harmful spices. Form the mixture into small, bite-sized patties and cook them thoroughly on a stovetop or grill, ensuring there are no raw spots. Let the burgers cool completely before serving. Always remember to serve in moderation and consult with a vet for any specific dietary needs.

· Dog-Friendly Pizza:

For a safe pizza treat for dogs, start by making or using a simple, whole-wheat or oat-based dough. For the “sauce,” use plain, unsweetened pumpkin puree or mashed sweet potatoes, which are safe and nutritious for dogs. Top the pizza with dog-friendly ingredients like shredded cooked chicken, diced carrots, and a sprinkle of grated, low-fat cheese like mozzarella (in moderation). Avoid using any onions, garlic, or seasoning. Bake the pizza in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10-15 minutes, until the crust is golden and the toppings are heated through. Let it cool completely before serving, and cut it into small, bite-sized pieces to ensure easy digestion.
