Five Philippine universities have made the Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2024, released on Wednesday (Philippine time).
Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) topped local higher education institutions by ranking at the 401-500 bracket. However, the university fell from its debut appearance last year at the THE Asia University Rankings 2023, when it placed 84th.
ADMU is followed by De La Salle University (DLSU) and the University of the Philippines (UP), which both figured in the 501-600 bracket. UP’s ranking dropped from the 210-250 bracket last year, while DLSU maintained its spot.
Lastly, Mapua University and the University of Santo Tomas (UST) both ranked at the 601+ bracket. This marks UST’s debut rank after initially appearing in last year’s ranking with “reporter” status, meaning it provided data to THE but did not meet its eligibility criteria to receive a rank.
The nine Philippine universities labeled Reporter this year include Cebu Technological University, Central Luzon State University, Mariano Marcos State University, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology, Tarlac Agricultural University, University of Eastern Philippines, University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines, and Visayas State University.
“The Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings 2024 use the same 18 performance indicators as the THE World University Rankings, but they are recalibrated to reflect the attributes of Asia’s institutions,” according to THE.
Overall, THE Asia University Rankings 2024 includes 739 universities from 31 territories. A total of 98 universities joined the rankings since last year — an increase led by India, Turkey, Iran, and Pakistan.
China’s Tsinghua University and Peking University took the first and second positions for the fifth year in a row, while five mainland Chinese universities featured in the top 10. However, it is Japan that remains the most-representation nation in the rankings overall with 119 universities this year.
