Jo Berry, Andre Paras find freedom in fantasy roles

It’s another successful year for Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko as the series celebrates its fifth anniversary with another fantasy-filled and star-studded episode. In the anniversary episode, viewers can expect new and familiar faces in the cast.

Among those returning is Kapuso star and lead actress of Litte Princess, Jo Berry. She plays a villain and acts as their leader. Although she dabbled in antagonist roles before, Jo shared that Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko is the first time she has a more defined villain role from a children’s fairytale book.

Jo Berry returns to ‘Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko’ for its fifth anniversary episode

Despite her character, Jo remains grateful to GMA Network for the projects they give her, especially since it coincides with her goal of portraying roles that viewers can learn.

Jo’s appearance in Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko’s fifth anniversary marks her third return to the series. It’s also her second time cast for the show’s anniversary special.

“Very special sa akin ang Daig kasi hindi pa ako naga-artista, pinapanuod ko na. Gusto ko kasi ng mga roles na gugustuhin ng mga kids, na papanuorin ng mga kids. Mostly kasi, ang mga nagme-message sa akin ay mga kids,” Jo said in an online media conference for Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko’s anniversary episode.

Andre Paras’ appearance in the children’s fantasy series marks his comeback to showbiz

She added that these roles are far from heavy drama, and she feels happy whenever allowed to star in a fantasy show because it’s close to her personality. Moreover, transitioning to a villainous role for the show wasn’t difficult because she only stayed within levels appropriate for younger audiences.

“Ipapakita lang doon na bossy siya, iritable siya, pero hindi siya ‘yung nang-aapi totally,” she said.

While Jo becomes a familiar face in Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko, Andre Paras returns to showbiz after taking a break from his acting career. He feels grateful that the network welcomed him back with open arms by casting him in the show’s anniversary episode.

Rufa Mae Quinto joins the cast of ‘Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko’ anniversary episode titled ‘Bida Kontrabida’

He joins Jo in the cast of villains in the show’s upcoming anniversary episode. Nonetheless, he feels excited to have creative freedom for his role in the fantasy series.

“Sa ibang ginagawa kong projects dati, minsan pinagsasabihan ako na ‘Andre, you’re too jolly. Masyado kang hyper.’ And I accept that kasi manchild pa din ako, very energetic. Nung dumating ako dito sa Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko, I have the freedom to do what I want,” Andre said.

Upon learning that the show revolves around children’s stories and he’s a villain, Andre toned down his acting to keep himself from being too scary. Instead, he enjoyed playing his character, listening to the director on how to approach the scene, and adapting to his co-star’s energy to match the lightness of the show.

Cai Cortez keeps herself busy with the role in ‘Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko’

Joining Jo and Andre in the cast for Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko are Rufa Mae Quinto and Cai Cortez. Like Jo, Cai is a familiar face in the children’s fantasy series, while Rufa has recently returned to showbiz, starting with the GTV sitcom Tols.

Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko’s anniversary episode premiered on July 10, Sunday, on GMA.
