Defensor unfazed by Belmonte-Robredo alliance

Quezon City mayoral candidate and party list (Anakalusugan) Rep. Michael “Mike” Defensor has indicated he was unfazed by the alliance between his main opponent, incumbent mayor Joy Belmonte and Vice President-now presidential aspirant Leni Robredo.

“We expected their alliance from the start because they (Belmonte and Robredo) go back a long way,” Defensor said, referring to Belmonte’s open support for Robredo when the latter ran for vice president in 2016.

Defensor said he was not bothered by Robredo’s decision to endorse Belmonte for mayor, as well as Belmonte’s support Robredo for president in the forthcoming May 9 elections.

MUTUAL SUPPORT. Party-list Rep. Michael Defensor, who is running for mayor in Quezon City, raises the hand of front-running presidential aspirant Ferndinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr during a rally in Quezon City. Defensor says he is unfazed by the alliance between his prime rival, incumbent QC Mayor Joy Belmonte and Vice President Leni Robredo who is running against Marcos for the presidency in the May 9 polls.

Former Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio earlier endorsed Defensor for Quezon City mayor.

Defensor sees the Marcos-Duterte tandem for president and vice president winning by a landslide in Quezon City, which has 1.4 million registered voters.

“Our projection is that the Marcos-Duterte tandem could receive up to 64 percent of the votes in Quezon City, depending on the number of people that will actually go out and cast their ballots on May 9,” Defensor said.

In the latest Pulse Asia survey conducted March 17-21, Marcos retained his big lead in the presidential race with 56 percent as opposed to Robredo’s 24 percent.

The same survey showed Duterte-Carpio enjoying 56 percent voter support, whereas Robredo’s vice presidential running mate, outgoing Sen. Francis Pangilinan, was also way behind with only 15 percent.
