Mayor Toby Tiangco recently led the inspection of the NavoHimlayan public cemetery to ensure safe and smooth observance of All Saints’ and All Souls’ Day or “Undas.”
“More than 10,000 visit the NavoHimlayan, and its adjacent private cemeteries, during Undas. We want to make sure that everything will go smoothly, there are no untoward incidents, and visitors stay safe,” Tiangco said.
Around 700 police, fire officers, city and barangay personnel, health and emergency staff, sweepers and volunteers will be deployed on November 1 to man the city cemetery, the mayor said.
The city government has also tapped the Philippine Army, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, and Philippine Red Cross for additional manpower.
“We expect 15,000 visitors this year, that’s why we want to be prepared for any eventuality,” Tiangco said.
The city government advised residents to finish cleaning tombs and niches on Oct. 30, 5 p.m. Cleaning or painting materials left inside the cemetery will be confiscated after this date.
The city also announced closure of Gov. Pascual St.—from A. Ignacio St., Brgy. Daanghari to Los Martirez St., Brgy. San Jose—from Oct. 31, 1 p.m. to Nov. 2, 12:01 a.m.
It reminded residents and visitors to refrain from bringing weapons or any sharp objects, firearms, liquor or alcoholic drinks, gambling paraphernalia, and loudspeakers inside the cemetery.
Parents or guardians were also encouraged to ensure that their children wear IDs bearing their name, contact details, and address in case they get separated.
“We also appeal to all residents and visitors to practice zero waste in the cemetery. Please refrain from irresponsible disposal of trash. Let’s respect the final resting place of our departed loved ones and let’s keep it clean always,” Tiangco said.
