Grid operator National Grid Corp. of the Philippines placed the Luzon grid under yellow alert for several hours Monday after 4,744 megawatts of power generation capacity became unavailable.
“NGCP has placed the Luzon grid under yellow alert Oct. 14, 2019 from 10:01 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 1:01 p.m. to 4 p.m. This is due to insufficient operating reserve brought about by power plant outages,” power retailer Manila Electric Co. said in its advisory.
Meralco said a yellow alert is raised when reserve power is low. The company asked participants of its interruptible load program to prepare the use of their generator sets to help prevent/minimize incidents of power outages.
“We are closely monitoring the situation. The power bureau is on this,” Energy Undersecretary Felix William Fuentebella said.
Data showed that of the total 4,744 MW that became unavailable, 2,955 MW or 62.3 percent came from unplanned outage of power plants. Around 33.9 percent was due to the derating of power plants while 3.8 percent was due to planned outage.
