FILIPINO grandmaster Wesley So’s world ranking has gone down following a third-place finish in the 2018 United States Chess Championships in St. Louis, Missouri.
From third place in the FIDE rankings last year, So slipped to no. 8 after he finished with his campaign with two wins and nine draws.
A 30-move draw with Hikaru Nakamura in their Nimzo Indian Defense game allowed him to settle for third spot with 6.5 points.
So, who won the crown last year, earned $25,000 from his stint. He now has an ELO rating of 2778.2
GM Samuel Shankland claimed the crown after he surprised Awonder Liang with the Caro Kann opening and won in 43 moves.
He collected $50,000 after posting six wins, built around four wins while playing the black pieces. Shankland also had five draws,
Fabiano Caruana took second with eight points and after turning back Vladimir Onischuk in 29 moves of a Ruy Lopez. Caruana took home $35,000.
