MMDA clears Sampaloc street after ‘8888’ complaints

Chairman Danilo Lim of the Metro Manila Development Authority on Wednesday ordered the dismantling of illegal establishments, merchants and other obstructions along a street in Sampaloc, Manila following numerous complaints received through President Rodrigo Duterte’s Hotline 8888.

Lim said the state of congestion along the whole stretch of Geronimo Street in Barangay 432, Zone 44 has reached critical levels, with motorists and pedestrians finding it near impossible to get through.

Lim said the clearing operation is in response to the directive of the Presidential Action Center to decongest the subject road where the Ospital ng Sampaloc is situated.

“Barangay leaders are aware of this clearing operation since this road was a subject of complaint through 8888. Residents have reported the presence of illegally-parked vehicles and food stall businesses on the road,” he said.

The President’s Hotline 8888 is dedicated to complaints against fixers, scalawag officials and poor government services.

Callers will be asked to identify the government employee and agency tagged in their complaint, date and details of the incident, their proposed solution and contact details.

The complaints will be forwarded to both the concerned agency and the Office of the President within five days.

The MMDA-Special Operations Task Group conducted the clearing operations in Sampaloc with the help of personnel from the Manila City-Anti-Illegal Parking Unit.

During the operations, the MMDA did not spare food stalls, eateries, sari-sari stores illegally constructed in the area. All were dismantled despite residents’ plea for a longer period to tear down their stands voluntarily.
