UNIVERSITY of the Philippines improved on its ranking this year in the latest annual Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings released Thursday.
However, Ateneo de Manila University and University of Santo Tomas declined while De La Salle University retained its 2016 ranking.
Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States was still no. 1 in the world followed by Stanford University and Harvard University.
Nanyang Technological University in Singapore was the best in Asia and 11th best overall.
UP, the Diliman, Quezon City-based state university, placed 367th, up from 374th in 2016 while Ateneo fell to 551-600 from 501-550 and UST to 801-1000 from 701+”•although UST was the only Filipino university that obtained four QS stars in employability, facilities, social responsibility and inclusiveness.
De La Salle University maintained its 701-750 band.
“The University of the Philippines gains seven places while Ateneo de Manila drops to the next band,” said QS Research Director Ben Sowter.
“UP Diliman is the flagship university of the UP System. It is the administrative seat of the system as well as an autonomous university in its own right,” QS World University Rankings said.
“UP Diliman is not only the home of diverse colleges offering 94 graduate and undergraduate courses, it also runs several centers of research of which many have been declared by the Commission on Higher Education as National Centers of Excellence.”
The survey notably ranked UP’s archeology program at 101-150 while Ateneo’s English language and literature subjects ranked 201-250, while De La Salle’s linguistics program was at 151-200.
