Workers of the Department of Engineering and Public Works in Makati City have collected 700 metric tons of solid waste and silt during its massive declogging operations on the drainage system in various barangays since January.

Mayor Abigail Binay said the men from the DEPW led by its chief engineer Elmer Acuesta noted their operations to date have covered some 70,359 linear meters of drainage in 22 barangays in the city’s two legislative districts.

The mayor has directed the DEPW to continuously implement massive declogging operations throughout the city as part of the flood mitigation efforts of the city government.

“We must make sure that our drainage system would be able to function well and flow freely even during heavy rains, particularly in flood-prone barangays,” Binay said.

Also on the mayor’s orders, the DEPW has been conducting clearing operations at the Estero Tripa de Gallina easement in Brgy. San Isidro in February, April and May, where they dismantled 89 illegal structures and hauled 200 metric tons of scrap materials and garbage.

“We have to be vigilant and make sure that easement zones near our waterways remain free of illegal structures and informal settlers. Let me remind concerned barangay captains of their duty to strictly monitor these areas within their jurisdiction and maintain the improvements done by our city engineering department,” Binay said.
