QUEZON City is batting for the provision of free internet services in its 42 barangays.

The Quezon City Council has passed a resolution urging the city’s barangays to provide free internet services to enable the public to access government services online.

District 5 Councilor Aly Medalla authored Resolution 7005-2017, urging all barangays to provide free internet access, citing the move as necessary “to support the technological capabilities and needs of residents, especially those who still do not have internet access.”

“Despite the fact that almost each Filipino owns at least one phone or mobile device, a significant portion of the population still do not benefit from internet access,” the resolution read.

According to the 2014 edition of the State of Broadband report, only 37 percent of Filipinos were able to use the internet in 2013, which is below the world average of 37.9 percent, the resolution cited.

The findings have placed the Philippines at 106th out of 191 countries evaluated.

In Southeast Asia, four countries beat the Philippines in terms of Internet penetration —Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam and Vietnam.

Singapore placed 35th as 73 percent of its population accessed the internet in 2013. Malaysia is at the 45th spot at 67 percent, Brunei Darussalam at 51st at 64th.5 percent and Vietnam at 89th at 43.9 percent.

Other Asean countries were in the lower half of the list, including Thailand at 116th (28.9 percent); Indonesia at 138th (15.8 percent); Laos at 147th (12.5 percent); Cambodia at 166th (six percent); and Myanmar at 189th (1.2 percent).
