About 80,000 volunteers from educational institutions, local government units, civil society, private groups and the business sector in Zambales gathered along the shoreline of San Narciso on Saturday to participate in the 32nd International Coastal Cleanup 2017.

The annual activity, as organized by the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary, was simultaneously held all over the Philippines and 100 states around the world.

The Philippines has been actively participating in ICC for the past two decades and has constantly held second place in the world in terms of the most number of volunteers for the past five years. This led the PCGA to register with the Guinness World Record as “The Largest Number of Volunteers in a Single-Day Coastal Cleanup Event.”

According to ICC-Philippines National Coordinator Rear Admiral Gerry P. Reyes, the Philippines aimed for 150,000 volunteers this year to double more than 2015’s 107,000 participants.

The ICC, according to RAdm. Reyes, goes beyond cleaning a country’s waterways by picking and collecting trash from the shoreline and seabed. The global initiative of the Ocean Conservancy based in Washington D.C. aims to gather data on the number of common garbage found along the shoreline; many of which are composed of cigarette butts and micro-plastic materials.

About 12,000 volunteers in Metro Manila also participated in ICC along the shoreline of Roxas Boulevard, Mall of Asia, Diokno Boulevard, and Las Piñas Protected Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area. The same was expected from Cavite Province and many other coastal communities of the country.

ICC results in 2015 showed that the province of Zambales topped the list of the most number of participants about 89,000 volunteers, followed by Cebu, Manila, Batangas and Cavite.
