TUGUEGARAO CITY—In preparation for the rainy season, the Department of Science and Technology here is installing 30 siren warning posts all over the Cagayan Valley region, which is expected to be completed before the year ends.

According to the Regional Disaster Office, at least six flood warning posts have been installed, strategically stationed at the flood-vulnerable towns of Cagayan province.

John Michael Taguiam, regional disaster action officer, said initial training and public education campaigns have been conducted in low-lying areas where the flood siren posts are located.

“We have to capacitate these communities on what to do when the siren is heard. There are different levels of the siren and these are taught to residents so that they know what to do in times of floods,” Taguiam said.

In addition to warning stations, the DoST is also installing rain gauges and water level stations in the different parts of the region with 120 weather monitoring stations in the region already established.

“We are urging the public to protect the monitoring stations in their respective communities as they are very helpful in giving accurate weather forecasts and warnings in times of calamities,” Taguiam said.

He said they are also working with local government units to help capacitate their constituents on disaster preparedness to achieve resiliency among Cagayanos.
