Dissecting the best gadgets of 2017

THE year gave us a lot to cheer (and jeer) about 2017.

Let’s admit it, there there are still no flying cars zooming overhead or Scotty beaming up anybody, but credit 2017 for producing some pretty interesting stuff.

From revolutionary animojis,  to the most game-changing tech, Manila Standard’s Tech and Gadgets Section takes a look at the past year’s top gadgets and electronic devices.

Under Armour Gemini 3 Graphic

What a time to be alive. We’re at a juncture in man’s history where everything can be made smart (except the wearer, kidding!). Under Armour’s latest venture into the smart shoes industry is nothing short of amazing. Especially if it’s a standalone product without the need of a smartwatch or smartphone.

Aukey Charging Stand Wireless charging has seen a rise with more and more smartphones adopting the tech. With Aukey’s stylish charging stand, users have one attractive and more practical wireless charger that’s convenient than its flat predecessors.

Google Pixel 2, Galaxy S8, and Iphone X

Even if smartphone manufacturers try to outdo each other year after after, 2017 was still a special year for these handheld devices we can’t seem to live without.

Google has simplified its flagship handset, offering a streamlined processor, a conservative design and very few bells and whistles, top that with top-of-the-line main camera shooter. Meanwhile Apple’s Iphone X may be expensive but the beautiful edge-to-edge screen, facial recognition security and of course, animojis are enough to send the die-hard apple fanboys into a frenzy.

For Samsung’s part, its flagship Galaxy S8 has really set the standards for smartphones in 2017. Samsung made an effort to simplify the phone’s innards and made the phone one of the most elegant looking phones in recent years.

Nintendo Switch

Nintendo’s newest modular gaming tablet has really set the tone for much of the competition. Though this revolutionary device can’t be put side by side with its rivals in terms of monstrous processing power or multiplayer capacities, this console offers an entirely new approach.

Sony Xperia Touch

Gone are the times when visual learning in the classroom is reserved anywhere else.  Now with Sony’s Xperia Touch , turn any surface into an interactive touch screen.  Bring it anywhere and be the coolest person in the 50-km vicinity.

Ultimate Ears Wonderboom

UE speakers for short, this company is the maker of the beloved Boom and Roll models. This latest gadget from the speaker brand is waterproof, packs a punch, and compact for the perfect sound trip anytime, anywhere.

Sony Alpha A7R III

Sony has really revved up their game in 2017 and has produced award-winning pieces of digital SLRs to date. The tech giant’s Sony Alpha A7RIII stands as one of the best mirrorless cameras ever made. But the lower price and heightened performance are likely more than enough to impress pro and novice photographers alike. Come to think about it, the company may just have something in store for us in 2018 that will make us change our minds about the A7R III.

Microsoft Surface Laptop

This may be Microsoft’s first crack at a real laptop, but the Surface is already a real winner. Between its light and elegant design, sharp screen, and long-lasting battery, the Surface Laptop is solid choice for anyone seeking a new Windows computer. Then again, don’t just take our word for it, as we’ve only scratched the surface on this. No pun intended.

DJI Spark

Released this year, Spark, a mini drone that features all of DJI’s signature technologies, allows you to seize the moment whenever you feel inspired. With intelligent flight control options, a mechanical gimbal, and a camera with incredible image quality, the DJI Spark empowers you to push your creative boundaries. The pocket sized (if you have a big enough pocket) drone requires little to no effort in setting up that you can bring wherever you want without the sacrifice of image and video quality.

Amazon Echo Show

According to the Paste Magazine’s Eric Walters, the Show works largely the same way as a traditional Echo, it shakes up the formula by including a 7-inch touchscreen and camera, allowing users to employ the device for video calls and consuming content like YouTube videos.

The year 2017 was quite the year for tech and gadgets, though there wasn’t much to really turn heads around in terms of innovation, but the upgrades that these new iteration products got from their predecessors in the past years are undoubtedly still amazing.

Expect manufacturers to push the envelope in 2018 and Manila Standard Tech and Gadgets is here to put these products under our keen microscope.
