Coronel leads NCR to 6 swim golds

BANTAY, Ilocos Sur– Fifteen-year-old National Capital Region standout Samantha Coronel wasn't alone in her celebration, when she claimed her first individual record in the secondary girls' 100-meter backstroke at the Quirino Stadium pool here.

Her teammates Camille Buico, Thanya de la Cruz and Zoe Hilario was with her in a frenzied double celebration after they topped the 4×50 meter medley relay heats as well.

Their efforts contributed to NCR's domination of the swimming event of the 2018 Palarong Pambansa as it ended its second day of competitions on Tuesday.

NCR went on to finish the day with six golds, five silvers and three bronze medals, followed by Region 12 (Socsargen) has a 6-3-5 tally and Western Visayas (Region VI) trails with 5-6-6.

I'm really this is the first time I've broken a record in an individual event. In the past three years, its all team relay records,” said Coronel, an incoming Grade 11 student at the Colegio San Agustin in Makati City.

She won the secondary girls' 100-meter backstroke finals in 1:06.58, resetting last year's 1:017.12 of Nicole Pamintuan.

Region IV-A's Bhay Newberry settled for the silver, while Region VI's Kyla Soguilon took the bronze.

Team NCR then topped the 4×50 meter medley relay heats in 2:03.49, breaking last year's mark of 2:07.13.

In the afternoon, Coronel and company beat Region IV-A with a higher clocking of 2:03.65.
