After 14 long months, “The King” is finally back in the Philippines.

Danny Kingad is set for a return bout in Manila when he takes on DEEP Flyweight Champion Tatsumitsu “The Sweeper” Wada in a three-round Flyweight showdown at ONE: HERO’S ASCENT which emanates from the Mall of Asia Arena on 25 January.

This will be Kingad’s first match in his home country since unsuccessfully challenging for the ONE Flyweight World Championship back in 2017 when he lost to then-titleholder Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes via rear naked choke at ONE: LEGENDS OF THE WORLD.

Since then, Kingad has racked up three straight wins against quality opposition, and he hopes to carry that momentum against his Japanese opponent.

“I'm very excited for this opportunity to compete again here in my hometown and in front of my fellow countrymen, friends, and family. I’m thanking ONE Championship for allowing me again to fight here in Manila,” Kingad said.

“I’ve been waiting for this opportunity to compete here in Manila for quite some time already, but I know that eventually, this moment will come,” he added.

But taking on Wada will be easier said than done for Kingad as the 30-year-old Japanese has won nine of his last ten matches.

After losing a close one against Reece McLaren, Wada bounced back by making short work of Filipino spitfire Eugene Toquero last November, catapulting him to this high profile match against Kingad.

A win here would certainly put either of the two fighters in line for a title shot, and Kingad is confident he has what it takes to overcome the craftiness of Wada.

“I know he has a strong overall game, but I trained very hard for this match and will be ready for whatever he presents on Friday. I am confident that I can win this fight against him.“
