Vinuya grabs chess lead with 4th win

Ruth Joy Vinuya of Ilagan, Isabela, playing under the banner of the star-studded GM Jayson Gonzales Far Eastern University chess team toppled Josemier Jene Panol in the fourth round to grab the solo leadership board in the Girls Under 16 with perfect 4.0 points in four outings in the event hosted by Legaspi City Mayor Noel Rosal.

Alexandra Sydney Paez scored back-to-back draws in the ongoing 2019 National Age-Group Chess Championships (NAGCC)- Luzon Leg being held at the Pacific Mall in Legazpi City, Albay.

Paez halved the point with Jonah Kris Llantino of Dasmariñas, Cavite in the third round and Oryza Reign Repato of Cabuyao City, Laguna in the fourth round.

The grade 9 student of Colegio de San Juan de Letran Calamba Paez improved to a total of 3.0 points to share 2nd to 7th places with Josemier Jene Panol, Ella Krizia Mendoza, Ledj Jannalyn Barcenas, Janneth Mercader and  Rohanisah Buto.

Paez earlier brought down General Trias City, Cavite bet Jeanelle Cabatian in the first round then subdued local bet Deanne Clarice Bea in the second round.

The event is backed by Cabuyao City, Laguna mayor Rommel Gecolea, Cabuyao City Chess Club, Jolly Smile Dental Clinic and Colegio de San Juan de Letran Calamba. 

The top three in this leg will advance to the Grand Finals. Top three in the Grand finals will earn tickets to the 20th Asean Chess Age-Group Chess Championships to be held Malanday, Myanmar on June 9.
