Her journey to the host city of the 2013 Summer Universiade has all the blessing and support of the FESSAP, which has participated in the FISU event for the last several years.

Garcia’s inspiring story is worth sharing to all student athletes who aspire to become leaders in their field of endeavors.

It all started way back in early 2014, when Garcia, then a student athlete from Mapua University, was chosen to represent the Philippines in the taekwondo competitions of the 28h Summer Universiade in Gwangju City, South Korea in July of the following year.

“I was just an average taekwondo athlete but was chosen because of dedication, hard work, and self-determination,” said the 21-year-old Garcia.  “I may not have been the best, but I certainly was blessed.

“After my Gwangju stint, I chose to remain with FESSAP in another capacity, not because I needed to but because I wanted to. I was one of the many volunteers in various international sports events hosted by FESSAP such as the World University Cycling Championship and the recent World University Golf Championship, both of which turned out to be a success in terms of organization and manpower.

“Because of my involvement in those events, I gained self-confidence, knowledge, was exposed to cultural exchanges and was able to foster friendship with participants from other countries.

“As an executive member of the FESSAP Athletes Committee, I was entrusted to form my own team.  It was not smooth sailing in a leadership role but my persistence and perseverance bore fruit in the end, knowing full well that FESSAP always had my back,” she said.

The FISU Volunteer Leaders Academy is a unique platform for volunteers and representatives of National University Sport Federations and Continental University Sport Federations for networking and exchange of best experiences in the delivery of major sporting events.

As of April this year, a total of 96 countries have nominated their representatives to the event.

“I am very grateful for the FESSAP for being a part of my journey in life.  The hard work of the men and women in the FESSAP has made me for what I am now,” Garcia said.

FESSAP has been in the forefront in the promotion of university sports in the country and elsewhere through its grassroots programs and the enhancement in the personal growth of student-athletes which it envisions to be potential leaders of our country in the future as well.
