Youth chessers stun veterans

WOMAN Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna downed International Master Barlo Nadera to cap the Young Rising Stars’ 8-4 win over the Veterans after six rounds of their match-up dubbed “The Battle of Legends” at the PACE office in Mindanao Ave., Quezon City yesterday.

Prodigy Daniel Quizon, the 2017 ASEAN Age Group Championship Under-14 titlist and 2018 Kidapawan Open champion, also provided a victory by downing IM Chito Garma, while Shania Mae Mendoza, Mikee Charlene Suede, Christy Lemiel Bernales, John Meril Jacutina and Michael Concio accounted for their team’s other wins.

John Marvin Miciano drew and Chester Neil Reyes split the point with IM Ronald Bancod and FIDE Master Adrian Pacis, respectively, to complete the triumph in this two-day showdown sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, headed by Butch Pichay and organized by Chess Events Internacionale.

Edmundo Gatus, Efren Bagamasbad and Elias Lao, Jr. delivered the other victories for the veterans, consisting of the old guards of PH chess.

After six grueling rounds comprised of two standard and four rapid games, the Young Rising Stars collected 107 points against the veteran’s 85.

But anything could happen in the finals’ eight blitz games, which was currently being played at press time, as a total of 96 points are being staked.

The event is being done as part of the preparation of the national women’s squad for the World Chess Olympiad set Sept. 23 to Oct. 6 in Batumi, Georgia as well as the ASEAN Age Group Championships the country will host from June 18 to 28 in Davao City.
