ITALIAN American grandmaster Fabiano Caruana missed the winning line and drew with Filipino GM Wesley So last Monday in the fourth round of the 2018 Tata Steel Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee, the Netherlands.

Caruana was in a better  position in his Nimzo Indian Defense game  with So, who found a way to split their game in 48 moves.

According to analysts, the game turned drawish when Caruana moved his bishop to the center right side with a g5 move.

Pushing one of his two knights to g5 could have allowed Caruana to gain control of the center.

From there, So managed to move more defensively and settle for his fourth straight draw.

He remains in third spot, sharing two points with Maxim Matlakov, Sergey Karjakin and Gawain Jones.

Anish Giri and Viswanathan Anand remained in the lead with three points, after Giri drew with world champion Magnus Carlsen in 31 moves of a French Winawer.

Anand kept his share on the lead in his 38-move draw in their Reti Game with Bashkaran Adhiban.

Carlsen tried something new by using  the queen g7 move variation of the Winawer system against Giri.

This allowed the Queen to quickly attack the kingside backrank. Then, a repetition of moves allowed  Giri to escape defeat.

Anand also got away with a draw via a repetition of moves after Adhiban chased the black king with a series of checks.

GM Vladimir Kramnik shares 2.5 points in second spot with Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and Carlsen.

Kramnik won over Peter Svidler In 24 moves of a Neo Gruenfeld, while Mamedyarov drew with Sergey Karjakin in 35 moves of a Petroff.
