THE three-day finals of 2017 World Slasher Cup 2 Invitational 9-Cock Derby kick off today (Monday) at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Known as the Olympics of Cockfighting, the World Slasher Cup, which began in the early 1960s and became an international phenomenon starting in 1988, had been attracting sabong fans in droves. This year’s fights have seen record numbers of attendees since it opened last Thursday.

“For the last four days, I met many cockers who are familiar faces in provincial cockpits. Foreigners and OFWs are also present,” said WSC media partner Manny Berbano of Pitgames Media.

The WSC’s main backers are Thunderbird and Petron, as well as Filipino-owned company Excellence Poultry and Livestock Specialists.

More than 40 qualifiers out of 100 with 2, 2.5, 3 and 3.5 points clash in today’s 4-cock finals.  The final round continues tomorrow and on Wednesday (for those with 4, 4.5 and 5 points).
