Tight race for La Salle, UST booters in UAAP

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas and La Salle, after blasting separate foes Sunday, are now locked in a tight race for the No. 4 slot in the UAAP Season 79 men’s football tournament at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The Growling Tigers overwhelmed Adamson University, 4-1, while the Green Archers blanked University of the East, 2-0.

On Saturday, Ateneo subdued National University, 1-0, to remain on top of the table with 23 points, while defending champion University of the Philippines bested Far Eastern University, 1-0, to level its victims in second place with 18.

UST moved up to 13 points in fourth spot, two clear of De La Salle, which now has 11.

Renz Gumban, Marvin Bricenio and rookie Conrado Dimacali scored their second goals of the season, while Darryl Regala also found the back of the net for the Tigers, who now have two victories in the second round.

Kim Bardaje averted a shutout for the Falcons with a late second half goal.

Marcus Garcia and Jose Montelibano struck in the 26th and 53rd minute, respectively, as the Archers posted their second consecutive clean sheet in the second round.

Jarvey Gayoso netted his league-best sixth goal of the season in the 11th minute as the Blue Eagles maintained their unbeaten record.

Raphael Resuma produced a 65th minute strike as the Fighting Maroons prevailed in the clash between the last two league champions.

The Bulldogs dropped to sixth with 10 points, while the Falcons and the Red Warriors stayed at five and three points, respectively.
