PH bags bronze in Asian winter tilt

TEAM Pilipinas struck with five goals in the first period to score a  9-2 win over Macau and grab its first-ever bronze medal in Division 2 of the ice hockey competitions of the 8th Asian Winter Games.

It was the only medal won so far by Philippines in the weeklong meet held from Feb. 19 to 26 in Sapporo and Obihiro, Japan.

Carl Montano, Miguel Alfonso Relampagos and Paul Gabriel Sanchez led the Filipino assault in the opening minutes, according to results released online.

Montano drew first blood with the first goal finding its mark in the one minute and 46-second mark.

Then, Relampagos struck twice at 6:53 and 14:13, before  Sanchez then made his presence felt at 12:31 and 17:16.

In reaching the bronze-medal play, the Filipinos won two games and lost one in Group 2. They dropped their opening match to Kyrgyzstan, 5-10, before bouncing back with a 14-2 beating of Qatar, and an 8-3 triumph over Independent Olympic Athletes.

Turkmenistan took the gold after they got past Kyrgyzstan, 7-3, in the finals.

The team brought  with them the experience they had after reaching the finals of the second division Hong Kong Invitationals for two consecutive years.
