Tapwrit made history by winning the 149th Belmont Stakes last June 10 at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.

According to Daily Racing Form’s Jay Privman in a tweet, “Tapwrit is [trainer Todd] Pletcher’s [third] Belmont winner. He becomes [the] ninth horse in [the] last 18 Belmonts to run in [the Kentucky] Derby, then skip Preakness, then win Belmont.”

Tapwrit with jockey Jose Ortiz aboard staged a rally from behind the fading favorite, frontrunner Irish War Cry, to win the race by a length.

Irish War Cry settled for second and one-eyed colt Patch third. The latter finished 14th in the KY Derby.

Out of 8 starts, Tapwrit (Tapit x Appealing Zophie) has logged a 4-1-0 record for $1.143 million in earnings so far. He won the Pulpit S. at two; what’s interesting about this is Pulpit (A.P. Indy x Preach) was his grandsire! At three, he won the Belmont and Tampa Bay Derby, and placed second in the Sam F. Davis. S.

This stellar victory of a Tapit son should give more impetus to the the Tapit progeny that are in the Philippines courtesy of Retap, the stallion owned by former Tarlac representative Jeci Lapus.

The Belmont is the oldest of the U.S. Triple Crown events and was first held in 1867. The Preakness S. was first run in 1873 and the KY Derby in 1875.
