Palace praises Filipino athletes

The Palace on Monday congratulated Filipino athletes participating in the th Southeast Asia Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia after the country’s medal tally improved to three golds, four silvers and four bronzes.

“Our warmest congratulations to the following athletes: Nikko Bryan Huelgas and John Leerams Chicano for winning the Philippines a gold medal and a silver medal in the men’s triathlon event; Marion Kim Mangrobang and Maria Claire Adorna for the gold and silver medals in the women’s triathlon event; Kareel Hongitan, Nicole Marie Tagle and Maryqueen Ybanez for the bronze medal in the women’s team recurve archery; and Mark Javier, Florante Matan, Gabriel Moreno and Rogelio Tremedal for the bronze medal in the men’s team recurve archery,” presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said.

Huelgas, Chicano, Mangrobang and Adorna—the four members of the Philippine triathlon squad —claimed the top medals in their event. 

Huelgas, the gold medalist in the previous SEA Games in Singapore, clocked one hour, 59 minutes and 21 seconds to retain his crown while teammate John Chicano timed 2:01:26 to formally complete a gold-silver medal haul in men’s triathlon.

Mangrobang registered 2:11:14 to win the gold medal while last SEA Games’ gold-medal winner Adorna settled for the silver with 2:18:58.
