PH squad targets SEA Games tennis crown

KUALA LUMPUR—The Philippine national tennis team will be playing without Filipino-American star Treat Huey, but it still remains confident that it would come up with a good performance in the 29th Southeast Asian Games Monday at the National Tennis Centre Sports Complex here.

Coaches Salvador Cuarto and Czarina Mae Arevalo said the can duplicate their runner-up finish in the previous edition of the biennial meet in Singapore two years ago.

Francis Casey Alcantara and Jeson Patrombon will compete in the men’s singles set at 12 noon before seeing action in the doubles competition at 4 pm.

Meanwhile, Filipino-German Katharina Lehnert and Anna Clarice Patrimonio start their campaign in the singles set at 10 am before competing in the doubles set together with the tandem of Denise Dy and Khim Iglupas at 2 pm.

Also playing for the country in the men’s cast are Fil-Am Ruben Gonzales and Albert Lim.

“We’re ready and raring to go and I’m very optimistic that we can surpass out second-place finish in Singapore in 2015,” said Cuarto, who started guiding the Nationals in the 2007 biennial meet in Nakhon Ratchasima in Thailand.

The 28-year-old Dy of San Jose, California is on her sixth SEA Games stint and had already collected two gold, four silver and eight bronze medals while the 23-year-old Lehnert is on her second participation with two silver and a bronze.
