For sophomore wingman Agem Miranda, being given the responsibility of taking the last shots of the game, and winning it for the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers gave him a chance to make up for his bad showing in the team’s last three games.

“Sabi ko kay coach, babawi ako sa game na ito. Bad game kasi ako sa huling tatlong laro namin,” said Miranda after the Heavy Bombers turned back the Arellano University Chiefs, 80-77, last Friday.

Miranda went on to finish with a career-high 26 points and five rebounds for the Heavy Bombers, who finally won their first game in the 95th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men’s basketball tournament at Filoil Flying V Sports Center.

Miranda scored a triple on an assist by teammate John de los Santos at the buzzer, and the Heavy Bombers finally won a game after four outings with Louie Gonzalez now calling the shots.

“Iyung last play. It was really a surprise for Agem na nilagay ko siya sa kanto, at iyung second play na ma-rebound niya iyung bola. Suerte lang talaga ang nangyari,” said Gonzales.

The Heavy Bombers, with Stefan Steinl hitting 14 points, will now have a chance to seek their second straight win when they meet the University of Perpetual Help Altas on Tuesday.

The Altas, who took an 80-82 loss in overtime to the Letran Knights, are in fourth with their 3-2 win-loss slate.

Miranda was overcoming cramps when he went for his triple.

And it was really bothering him when his putback with 25.3 second to go tied the count, 77-all.

“We really struggled in the first three games, pero it’s a process nga na dapat naming pagdaanan,” head coach Louie Gonzalez said.
