The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas is now investigating the mauling of two SBP referees in a game in Olongapo City last Saturday.

SBP Executive Director Sonny Barrios said this after learning of the incident wherein a player and a supporter attacked the two SBP game officials.

“The SBP condemns such act of violence, which definitely has no place in basketball and in sports, especially against game officials. The referees are the unsung heroes of any sport, for without them, no game can be technically conducted and concluded,” said Barrios in a statement.

SBP Regional Director for Region 3 Gil Cortez has been dispatched to Olongapo City to look into the matter.

Barrios said the SBP will extend assistance to the referees concerned.

Officials of the basketball body will also meet with local authorities so that the case can be proactively pursued.

“We trust that there will be no repetition of this ugly incident and we call on the basketball community to simply play and support the game according to its merits at all times,” said Barrios.

According to reports, the suspect has already surrendered to police.

One referee was reportedly beaten, while another was said to be stabbed after being chased off by angry players inside the court.

The incident, which has a video posted on Facebook, took place at the Tapinac basketball court.

In the video, the referee appeared to be wobbling while running away from his attacker before falling on the street.

The referee had a big cut on the right side of his cheek.
