CJ Perez shook off a mediocre first half and played the hero in the second half for the leading Lyceum Pirates after sinking a clutch three to pull away against their bitter rival San Beda U.

Reymar Caduyac could not find an opening from the middle and instead went for a kick out pass to the open Perez who drilled in a trifecta and gave the Pirates the much-needed cushion to post a 73-66 triumph over the defending champion San Beda Red Lions for their ninth straight triumph at the FilOil-Flying V Sports Center in San Juan. .

Perez scored 18 of his game-high 22 points in the second half, including the crucial trey in the final minute, which proved to be the dagger to the heart of the Red Lions with 28.9 ticks to go, and gave the Pirates a four-point edge, 70-66, then Jaycee Marcelino sealed the game with a three-point play in the remaining 14 seconds, completing a sweep of the first round in the 94th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men's basketball tournament for the Pirates.

Coach Topex Robinson credited Jeff Perlas for drawing the play, that allowed Perez to score the go-to-basket.

According to Robinson, the game was dedicated to continue lifting the spirit of the Lyceum community with every win.
