ON its third try, GlobalPort finally broke into the winning column, methodically walloping Rain or Shine, 78-70, to give its campaign a boost in the 2018 Philippine Basketball Association Philippine Cup last night at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

As expected, Stanley Pringle was the man for the Batang Pier as he flirted with a double-double with a game-high of 29 points and nine rebounds, while Sean Anthony was equally impressive without scoring much, tallying 13 rebounds and 12 assists on top of three points.

The dynamic twosome did damage once again for GlobalPort, but with a different result this time.

The Batang Pier improved to 1-2, tying the Elasto Painters, who lost their second straight game after winning their opener.

The Batang Pier turned in a solid finishing kick to eventually get itself its first success this season.

GlobalPort’s Stanley Pringle beats the defense of Rain or Shine’s Gabe Norwood as he scores on a layup in a PBA Philippine Cup game won by the Batang Pier, 78-70, at the Mall of Asia Arena Friday.

Determined to go all the way, GlobalPort, which led for most part of the contest, uncorked a key 8-0 run midway the payoff period to establish a vital 70-61 lead after Pringle’s jumper with 4:26 left.

There was no turning back from there as the Batang Pier, this time around, held on and finished off the Elasto Painters in the closing minutes.

The game was hanging in the balance with GlobalPort only ahead, 62-61, with 7:16 remaining, but that pivotal blitz proved to be the difference.

Kelly Nabong added 12 points and 13 rebounds for GlobalPort, while Bradwyn Guinto was likewise solid, contributing 10 markers and nine boards.

The Batang Pier started like a house on fire, quickly zooming to a significant double-digit lead, 19-5, halfway the opening period, but the Elasto Painters answered right away with a 13-0 blast of their own, making it 19-18 for GlobalPort at the end of one.

However, the Batang Pier kept their composure and remained in control the rest of the way, even though it wasn’t able to take a commanding lead after that initial onslaught.

Gabe Norwood led Rain or Shine with his team-high 15 points.

The scores:
