Painters boost bid for Top 4

USING a burly first-half storm, Rain or Shine kept its chances of ending in the top four as it mercilessly dismantled exiting Alaska, 112-82, to improve its stand in the homestretch of the 2017 Philippine Basketball Association Governors’ Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City last night.

It was a total team effort for the Elasto Painters, who drew scattered scoring from their chargers with J’Nathan Bullock producing 14 points, and Beau Belga and Jericho Cruz each having 12, and Don Trollano pitching in 11.

The win enabled Rain or Shine to improve to 6-4, hopeful for a shot at a top four finish. However, it still needs to win its last game and hope that the other teams contending upstairs drop their respective games.

The top four finishers will have a twice-to-beat incentive in the quarterfinals against the lower-seeded teams.

As early as the first half, the Painters showed why they are the ones headed to the quarterfinals and why the Aces are the ones headed to an early vacation.

Rain or Shine carried a 29-23 lead at the end of one and then it broke the game wide open in the second canto.

A quick 9-2 spurt to open up the second gave the Painters their first double-digit lead, a 38-25 spread.

Several minutes later, the game was already out of hand as the Painters kept pushing hard and found themselves already ahead by a gigantic 22-point advantage, 63-41, at the half.

There was no looking back from there for Rain or Shine as it breezed through the second half on its way to the easy victory.

Bullock and Belga each had 10 at the turn, while Chris Tiu and Mark Borboran also had solid first-half showings, each contributing nine after the first 24 minutes.

Alaska wasn’t able to end its season on a positive note and bowed out with a record of 3-8.
