Stags to use speed, versatility, aggressive defense

EXPECT the San Sebastian Stags to be tougher this season.

That’s because coach Egay Macaraya and members of the team did a lot of “tweaking” during the off-season and before the start of the 93rd season of the National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament.

The team worked on its speed, versatility and aggressive defense, making the Stags one of the contenders for the Final Four.

And they want to prove it when the season begins on July 8 at the Mall of Asia  Arena in Pasay City.

They believe that their efforts tweaking their game will help negate their size disadvantage, which was affected by the departure of big man Calvin Abueva and other big players from the team.

The Stags also boast of one of their their best players ever since Abueva’s time–Michael Calisaan, a 6’6” forward, who is taking and making three-point shots, while turning into a facilitator and a leader.

He will be backed up by veterans Ryan Costelo, Jerick Fabian, Alvin Capobres and Jayson David.

But there are younger players who can step up, too, such as Lorenzo Navarro, a La Salle transferee, who played high school ball for San Sebastian, and second stringers like Alfren Gayosa, Ian Valdez, Allyn Bulanadi and RK Ilagan.

“We know we’re a smaller team compared to others, who have foreign players. What we did was to outrun our opponents, play tougher defense and be versatile,” added Macaraya.
